2012 Torre de Ona Rioja Reserva (regularly $27.99, sale $15.99)

95% Tempranillo blended with 5% of Mazuelo.

While Torre de Ona was only created in 1995, the winery that founded it, La Rioja Alta, has been around since 1890. The winery is considered one of Rioja's greatest bodegas, and is steadfastly committed to traditional Rioja winemaking methods. So, while La Rioja Alta is adamant in its refusal to use French oak in keeping with the traditional Rioja use of all American oak, their Torre de Ona project is unhindered by these traditions. For instance, this Rioja reserva uses a 75% mix of new and used French oak. Yet while embracing many modern winemaking techniques, the one thing they don't mess with is the La Rioja Alta tradition of making wines that simply ooze elegance and class. Ripe red berries greet you with a background of spices, tobacco, and mocha, but what really makes this wine stand out is its broad and silky finish. Pure class. I was seriously taken aback at how well made this wine was for what I would have to pay for it. If you told me this would sell for $30 to $35, I'd have said that was about right. At $15.99 it's crazy good. It received 92 points from the Wine Advocate a year ago, but it's evolved tremendously since that time. Don't miss out on this one.
